Cheryl’s trek: Four dreams made possible

By APC Overnight on 9th January 2026

Our Payroll Manager, Cheryl Harvey, recently took on an extraordinary personal challenge, trekking 115km across Cambodia over 10 days through demanding terrain and unpredictable weather. She did it all to raise funds for The APC’s chosen charity, Promise Dreams.

Promise Dreams is a national charity dedicated to bringing joy to seriously and terminally ill children by making their dreams come true. Whether it is a once-in-a-lifetime holiday, meeting a hero they admire or receiving specialist equipment to support everyday life, the charity helps create cherished moments for children and their families during some of the most difficult times they will face.

Thanks to Cheryl’s determination, kindness and fundraising efforts, her amazing achievement has helped bring joy, comfort and unforgettable experiences to four incredible children, offering them and their families precious moments of happiness during some of the toughest periods of their lives.

Here are the stories of the children whose dreams Cheryl has helped make come true…

Obed’s dream: Opening up everyday life

Obed is 18 years old and lives with quadriplegic cerebral palsy, a condition that affects all four of his limbs. Classified as Level 4 on the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS), his mobility needs are complex. He uses a powered wheelchair to move around independently, but limited movement in his upper limbs means he needs support with many everyday tasks, from opening doors to managing personal care.

While Obed has the right equipment at home, this support does not extend when he is outside. This makes attending events, visiting family and friends or enjoying overnight stays far more challenging, limiting opportunities for social connection. Obed’s dream was to have a folding mobile hoist he could use beyond the home. Thanks to Cheryl’s incredible efforts, this is now possible, giving Obed greater independence and dignity and opening up opportunities to spend time with loved ones, take part in everyday activities and even explore future employment possibilities.

Mya’s dream: A magical family escape

Mya is 9 years old and bravely undergoing treatment for medulloblastoma, a type of brain tumour. Frequent hospital stays, chemotherapy and exhaustion have made everyday life incredibly challenging, limiting her ability to attend school full-time and enjoy many of the simple moments of childhood.

Mya had a big dream that Cheryl’s incredible efforts had helped make a reality. In January 2026, she will spend a night at Port Lympne Safari Park in one of the lodges. Some of her friends have already had this experience, and Mya is excited about the chance to create her own magical memories. For her, this is not just a trip. It is an opportunity to feel like a carefree nine-year-old again, to laugh, explore and enjoy a special adventure with her parents and younger brother, Monty. This experience will give Mya a joyful break from the challenges of treatment and precious family time that she will treasure long after the hospital visits are behind her.

Isla’s dream: A trip to Disneyland Paris

Isla is 6 years old and lives with cerebral palsy caused by periventricular leukomalacia (PVL). She uses a wheelchair full-time and relies on specialist equipment to support her mobility and comfort. Despite these challenges, Isla is a bright, happy and sociable little girl. She is chatty, curious and full of life, always eager to engage with the world around her.

Thanks to Cheryl’s incredible fundraising, Isla has recently enjoyed a magical trip to Disneyland Paris. The sensory-rich environment, accessible attractions and character meet and greets allowed Isla to fully take part in the experience, helping her build confidence, create lasting memories and feel completely included. For Isla and her mum, who is a single parent and her main carer, the trip was a precious opportunity to relax, spend quality time together and make special memories that will last a lifetime.

Ibrahim’s dream: A special Christmas adventure

Ibrahim is 11 years old and lives with Sjögren Larsson Syndrome, a rare life-limiting condition, alongside several complex health needs. He spent two years unable to live at home while essential adaptations and specialist equipment were put in place, meaning he missed out on much of everyday family life. Despite the challenges he faces, Ibrahim is a joyful and affectionate boy with a wonderful sense of humour, always finding ways to make those around him smile.

Peppa Pig is Ibrahim’s absolute favourite. He takes his Peppa Pig cuddly toy everywhere, watches the TV programme regularly and loves talking about the characters. His special wish is to visit Peppa Pig World at Christmas, his favourite time of year. Thanks to Cheryl’s incredible fundraising, Ibrahim and his family will soon be heading to Peppa Pig World, giving him the chance to meet his favourite characters, enjoy the magic of the festive season and share a special family day filled with smiles, laughter and memories they will treasure forever.

Cheryl’s trek was an extraordinary personal achievement, but the real impact lies in the lives she has touched. Through her determination, generosity and compassion, four children and their families will experience moments of joy, comfort and hope that might otherwise not have been possible.

Cheryl, we are incredibly proud of you. Thank you for going the extra mile - quite literally - and for making such a meaningful difference.
